I dont know when John will be able to post the picture. I am sorry for the bad quality of the picture, it is all I have for now. I will try and send some better ones soon with the help of Edelweiss.
Here is the story: this helmet was given to me in 1996 by the owners of a farm near Dignes, south of France. The city was liberated on august 17th 1944 if I remember correctely, two days after the landings in the south of France. Along with the helmet was a complete gas mask dated 1941. Even thow the people in the farm had owned the farm since the war, they didnt remember how the helmet got there. I suspect they picked it up as well as the gas mask after a surendering german thruw them on the ground.
The helmet is an SD 40. The chinstrap is dated 1941. There is a piece of phone wire going all around the helmet as is seen in the pic. Unfortunetely, the helmet was stored in the basement, with the wine bottles (yes, this is actualy true) and so was very rusty in several places. Since it was my first helmet, I didnt know better than to rub away the rust with the green part of a spunge. Ouch! Luckily, I didnt do to much damage, and I was smart enaugh not to take the camo wire of, or take it appart.
It is my only nice german helmet, and is very good appart for a few places where the paint is sort of worn down, and I love it, and cant wait to find anothere one in the woodwork. This time, it wont have to go thru the spung proces.
