Hi all since I have finally finished paying this off here is my SD SS M40 purchased from Bill Shea.
I havent got a digital camera so I will have to use Bill's pics.
It is a size Q68 shell with an aluminium size 61 liner marked 1940.

          Craig,
Nice helmet. Looks like the decal is a period replacement for the original issue one...not an uncommon feature on these. Is there any evidence of a party decal once being on the opposite side? Reason I ask is because it looks like an early M40.

Can't really tell in that picture. However, I'm betting there is evidence that there was a decal there. I'b be interested to find out once you receive the helmet.

              Cheers,

                    Darryl - good call

I looked at the helmet, there is no decal but where there would have been there is a patch of paint missing. It looks like it has been scraped off.
How did you know just of of curiosity's sake ??

Could have been a DD, can you post a photo of the area?

                        Craig,
I was just going on the vintage of the helmet. Being an M40 and with an aluminum banded liner it falls in that "transitional" period...very early in 1940. Since I have seen original DD M40s with the slightly later steel banded liner it made sense to me that this was a DD where the soldier followed orders and removed the party decal.

                        Cheers, and nice helmet!
