    SS Helmet

Last week I posted some pictures of an M40 SS SD helmet, and the reaction was that the decal is a fake. I have gotten some better pictures from the seller and post them here for a 2nd look.
New shot of decal is in the upper left. The rest are shots of original CA Pocher decals from the Kelly Hicks book, for comparison purposes.

Can we have a link to the post again. I am still not sure about that decal.

Now I remember. Still do not like it. For one thing a Pocher on a Q helmet that does not appear to be a reissue raises some flags. There are some pretty good fake pocher decals and IMO this appears to be applied on a nice nd Q helmet. What is the date on the liner band?

I still don't like it. Some of the design features are way off and the background field looks unnatural and too metallic. Like I originally said, a reasonably accurate Pocher fake in my opinion.

No doubt Bryan you are highly knowledgeable on SS helmets.

I have to say that in a decal comparison alone, it looks good for where I sit.

I can't access that link from this darn computer, so your analysis in regards to the configuration is an opinion with much experience behind it for sure..
I am looking at this thread with interest.

                Doug,

This is one where I would need to see it in the flesh to make an accurate appraisal. Some of the repro decals are very good these days but still fall short under close in-hand scrutiny.

The fact that it appears on a Quist helmet makes me take a step back and there are a couple of other attributes that get my senses tingling too. However, I am not about to make a call on this one...sorry.

                Cheers,

                  Dan,

I am flattered that you think that but could not be furthest from the truth. My knowledge comes from less than 8 years of first hand experience and from what I learned on the forums and reference books. Having said that a hands on inspection of the helmet might change my mind but I do not know if I would want this helmet in my collection. I do not get a great feeling from it.

                      Hi Darryl,

One of the bad points that stood out for me was the alignment of the left rune slice. On original Pochers, it seems the slice is nearly in-line with only a small strip of black remaining when lined-up. On the decal in question, that alignment is considerably off the mark and also at an angle. The right rune is also off, but not quite as bad. Have you seen this on any originals before? Thanks

Looks like you and Darryl nailed it on the configuration aspect.
                        Great synopsis.

here's a humble question from somebody that's a novice, but wouldn't there have been some very slight variations in those days? After all they didn't have modern graphics packages such as Adobe Illustrator to create graphics or modern printing equipment to print them....

                          just a thought

Not to try and come off as a decal expert, but yes, there are slight variations on decals that are considered normal and accepted. The differences I pointed out on this SS decal would be, at least in my eyes, above and beyond what would be considered acceptable. Just my opinion of course.
