How to remove period overpainting from a decal?

I will maybe buy this DD helmet. The problem is : There is period paintwork done over the national shield. Does anyone know, how to remove the paint without harm the original decal???

    Hello Wolf,

Although it was done by collectors in years past, it is now concidered a big no-no to remove period paint from decals.

It alters the helmets wartime appearance and will lower the resale value. Most collectors will pass on a helmet with "dug" decals.

    Best regards.

the cracks in paint looks really like the one on period covered decals.
My advice is to leave it this way, or, as Jim pointed it out, you'll really denature the helmet.

Have you got a larger pic of the helmet?

just looking at the decal it has history, this paint was painted on buy a soldier during the war,if you remove the paint you remove the history and the fact this helmet shows signs of the order passed down to remove the tri colour.yours was painted over most were scrapped off, this adds value to your helmet.remove it and the price of your helmet halves

This is not just a caprice of the owner - this is real army history of the helmet! In 1940 appeared an order - there must be no National shield /because of the snipers, if remember right/. And the decals were either scratched, or repainted. So, this is ral combat history of the lid! Please, do not remove tha pint! This will both reduce the value and destroy a piece of history in my opinion

                        Hello,

Nice to see so much repleys that give the advise not to remove the paint that covers the tri-color decal.
IMO good change in the adtitude of the helmet collecting sociaty, I remember it used to be different in the past; almost everything that wasn't in mint condition needed to be upgraded, altered or selfmade restauration jobs done on it.
In most cases the best advise is always to leave an item just as it is.
And if restaurations seems a good option; talk to a professional first, the most homemade restaurations I have seen where not much of a succes.
With the result that the items were destroyed compleetly imo

                        Cheers,
                        Peter

no, I think it was painted around. The painter has painted around it, leaving it visible. The regulations allowed the eagle /only in the late summer of 1943 appeared another Order, for the removal of the eagle, too - ortunately neither order was followed strictly, so we still have helmets with decals /

Wise words and I will add if you want to strip the decal of original paint why not go further and strip all the original reissue paint off ? Makes no sense , so don't do it.
