Perry, if they are handpainted (like this one), then obviously all conventional parameters of SS decals are inapplicable. How typical was it for soldiers to paint their runes on their helmets?

Well, it's obviously not a real decal and if it is a hand-painted job then it could be any sort of quality depending on the talent of the soldier. However, this looks to be in a feldgrau paint when decals were fairly prevalent. Hand-painted insignia are usually only found on very early examples of SS helmets and even then...in extremely rare circumstances.

This one is on a helmet that was sold here locally by a dealer. The buyer paid $2495.00 for this helmet...

Hmm...$2,495. Call me a pessimist, but I would always have doubts about the authenticity of handpainted SS runes (unless I had solid provenance). I think I would rather go for a textbook SS helmet. The additional cost of a textbook one will buy me peace of mind and avoid sleepless nights. Perry, what do you think about the handpainted ones?

, I'm pretty sure that one's not hand painted..I had never seen this one before so I decided to post it..
I don't aquire hand painted SS runes for my collection so I don't bother with them much..
Darryl may as he collects only All. SS helmets, but I'm not sure if he avoids these(hand painted) as well. I'm sure he'll comment..

Not to necessarly take up for the dealer that sold it but I have a good feeling he didn't know if it was a repo or real either...

                  Hi Perry

Can you post a picture from the compleet helmet?

As Perry mentioned, I only collect the black Allgemeine-SS helmets. As such, I would not turn down a hand-painted insignia helmet if I thought it was period done and real. In the early days (prior to early 1935) many black helmets were indeed hand-painted or stencilled. Unfortunately not many survived in this state as most (if not virtually all) of these helmets were repainted, decalled and re-issued. I have a hand-painted Allg-SS example in my collection today which I believe I have posted here before.

The helmet in discussion here is painted in feldgrau so if it is hand-painted, I would be extremely wary about it. If this is in fact a decal, then we need not waste our time anymore with this one.

Honestly I do not like anything about that helmet. Personally I wouldn't touch it.

What does everyone one think about this one on ebay, currently over $2000

                            Hi Smith

I was just looking at that picture to. the pictures are to blurry to make something out. Don't like that party shield that much to.
I think that the white circle is to large. The roundings from the decal is also not correct (to sharp) IMO.
