Clips in Waffen-SS camo covers

Hi,

What materials would be correct for the clips in first pattern Waffen-SS camo covers? Is a black and mildly glossy paint on the clips correct?

Hi Cesar,

My understanding is that early helmet clips were generally made of anodized aluminum...although they may also have been constructed of blued, anodized or untreated (raw) steel. A painted clip is of concern.... I would suggest you post an image so that others on the forum can offer their opinions.

Thanks, I handled this cover yesterday, it has been in a local collection since the late 70s/early 80s. I don't own it, will have to convince the owner about taking a picture.

The clips are made of aluminum. If anodized I believe it would display a matt finish instead of a shiny surface.

According to Mike Beaver's book, clips were either steel or Aluminum. Blued or blackened through anodizing. Some of the steel clips were left "raw".
