Never a good sign to me when the bottom is the only or most damaged part of the decal. That suggests (but doesn't completely confirm) that the decal might be a fake, as many of the repros have a bullet-rounded bottom.

Based on the photos, which show the cracking of the decal I would probably want a second opinion and if I couldn't get one I would probably walk away from this one.

Haven't we seen this one before? I thought the conclusion was the bottom was wrong despite the fact that part is missing.

                SS decal compare

                Hi all,

I have some doubts about this decal. I used your decal (hope that's not a problem) and compared it with an other ( that I think is original).
                I noticed two thinks.
                first:
The second rune bottom looks a bit slope
                second:
I also think that the runes are to long. They come over the rounding of the decal. Or the rounding (where it starts) in not totally correct.
                Just my thoughts
                Look at image

                  Nick,
The decal on the left is not a straight-on shot so there is a little bit of paralax error showing...that is the reason for the slight distortions you mention. I have my doubts about the comparison decal you show on the right. It seems to have a "glazed" look, the bottom does not come to a subtle point as it should and it seems to be too long and thin dimensionally.

You will find that different decal manufacturers had occasional minor variances in decal design. The decal on the left is a good one in my opinion.

Now that I see it side by side it looks better to me, but as I said I'd probably need a second opinion. I've kind of learned that unless I can get some other input it is best to steer clear from SS helmets. Obviously if a reputable dealer was selling it than I'd feel otherwise.

There are certain red flags that make me immediately want to get that second opinion on helmets. With SS helmets it is the bite in the bottom, just like para helmets that are ET71 make me guess. Both can be good...but those are the bright red flags to me.

Not an SS decal expert, but the wear on the decal looks very natural. I like the whole look.

                        Willi,
That's a very good point and often overlooked. Does the decal look like it's been on the helmet since day one? Is the decal wear consistent with the rest of the helmet? And, the decal aside...is the rest of the helmet itself completely original?

                        Peter,
I know what you mean but in this case it's coincidental that the bottom portion of the decal is missing. However, if you look at the "hit" on the helmet in that position...it's totally natural. Someone hasn't just scratched away the bottom point.

                          SS helmet

Hi guys, I can't walk away from it, I own it. I could see your point on staying clear of decals that have the bottom portion missing. But then I guess we would be passing up alot of original SS helmets because the bottom of the decal is only one focal point. When I purchased this helmet I was sure that it was original but I am no expert neither. Also this helmet or decal was never posted on any forum. I can also add, which doesn't attest to it's originality, that this helmet is pictured on page 69, Vol 2 of Kelly Hicks book on SS helmets. Thanks very much so far for all your comments whether uplifting or not. I hope that when the jury is finally in it will be a keeper. DEL

                            Del,
Not to worry. It's definitely a keeper.

I wanted to let this one take it's own course at what collectors thought before I gave my opinion...
I feel this helmet is 100% right, thanks for wanting to post Del. A very fine WSS helmet in my opinion..

Nick, I compliment you for effort...
