you are mistaken here, the picture posted by Ken shows you a nice cover with the same method of attaching the spring. Have a look at Mike beavers books and you will find that there is nothing unusualy about this method and that it is indeed "textbook".

I am afraid to recognize that you and Ken are right (Ken, nice cover by the way).
The method I described seems to be more common on second pattern ones but this is not (at least those that I have seen).
Having said that I believe this one is a very fine example.
