That is all the pics I have taken. The helmet is, as I mentioned, a "Q" size 64 shell. I have not checked the liner band stampings. I hope this helps?
    Cheers, Ade.

      2 SS helmets

Attached are photos of the two 1939 dated SS helmets both made by ET that I mentioned earlier in this thread. The top is the parade finish green helmet (the photo makes it appear darker than it actually is) and the bottom one is feldgrau with tan camo tortise shell paint.

The second helmet was bought in 1983 along with a tan FJ helmet, 2 army daggers, one tropical army field cap, 3 Lugers, 2 P38's; a PPK, 4 belts and buckles (one SS), a vehicle flag for tanks, an EKI, and 3 arm bands from Merchant Seaman William Merritt who made two trips to Naples in 1944. He traded cigarettes, nylons, and candy for war souvenirs and wrote down that he got the SS "Tortise" from an English Sgt. who said his squad killed the SS soldier who was attached to an anti aircraft unt on a truck mounted with a multi barreled (Flakvierling) AA gun. He also had the man's P.38 but didn't remember which one it was after he took it off the belt. He noted that the Brits were sent back to Naples from the fighting north of there (which would have been at Anzio/Nettuno) for a rest.

16.SS-Panzergrenadier Division "Reichsfuher SS" had elements detached and fighting at Anzio/Nettuno inlcuding SS.Flak.Abt.16 and SS.Panz.Gr.Rgt.36.

          Ralph,
Two beautiful SS helmets...very nice indeed. It's wonderful when you know the "history" of a certain piece, like the tortoise camo example.

          Cheers,

                helmets today

                Perry,

I still own the tortise shell helmet along with the tan FJ (with chicken wire) helmet I got from Merritt's collection. Some years ago I sold the prewar parade finish green DD SS M35 to a prominent collector in NY state who has been a speaker at the MAX. I don't know that he'd want his name on the Internet so I won't name him. I also sold him an SS camo helmet cover in order to provide funds to collect more tropical items from N. Africa for my collection. He had both items checked by other collectors in the field and was very happy with them. One of the negative things about the high prices and values of German militaria today is that some of us have to sell something in order to buy something else -- particularly when you decide to specialize in just one area (in my case German tropical).

I'd love to have been financially able to "keep it all" -- particularly after 50 years of collecting but that hasn't been possible. One nice thing about buying a camo helmet in 1983 from a veteran -- you didn't have to worry about today's high quality fake decals, fake camo finishes, etc. When you got a whole pile of souvenirs from a veteran then, you were mostly getting the "real deal" even though some occupation troops in Germany after the war got postwar made fake medals, sniper rifles, etc. that they brought home. When I started collecting WWII German militaria, WWII German helmets were $6.50 from Robert Ables in NYC -- that's $6.50 for any German helmet whether it was an M35 SS or a Luftschutz helmet.

                        FJ helmet

                        John,

I just sent you two photos by email ofthis helmet. This is Perry's thread on feldgrau SS helmets and the FJ would be out of place here. Perhaps on some other thread on camo FJ helmets in the future. We'd all like to see more of the feldgrau SS helmets as hard as they are to find these days and to know which makers produced them.

It doesn't look like anyone that vists the forum has one in their collection. I've never owned one because I like the dark grey colored ones.
I would like to find out what maker seemed to make alot of these green SS helmets (wartime feldgray)
