Perry,
I assume you are talking about the smooth gray, non-textured paint. One that would be found on a reissued M-35 or original issue M-40? I have the M-35 double decal that was reissued with a smooth darker green and re-decaled that I have posted before. I don't think that is what you are after though.

Ty,
It has a simple foliage band stuffed up inside the liner. Both the helmet and the band are very, very far from "new" condition, and match perfectly.
I guess if you collect this stuff long enough you do find some "extras" once in a while. Once I figure out the image "thingie", I'll post some others, including an Erel white traffic Police Crash helmet that still has the original Erel care and use brochure/pamphlet "stuck" to the inside.

M35
Here is a photo of a double decal (SS both sides with the one on the left side scraped off) that I used to own. It was a darker gray than the army's feldgrau. It had a folded up SS newspaper stuck inside the liner between the felt pad and the leather to reduce it in size and the paper was stained from sweat and hair oil. I photographed both sides of the helmet, closeups of the decals and the newspaper as well. I believe the maker was ET but can't find my notes on the helmets I used to have right now to be certain.Attached Files

Hello,
I have two problems concerning colours of helmets. This thread might be a opportunity to solve them.
1) Could anyone give an overview which colours are textbook at which dates for which types of combat helmets of the Wehrmacht branches and W-SS. Like applegreen/smooth for M35 DD, fieldgrey/textured for M40 SD and so one. What about reissued helmets. Do they conform with new made helmets of the time of their reissue?
2) Does anyone know "official" German names or RAL numbers of the different colours for German helmets from contemporary sources? In secundary (post 1945) literature and forums quite different names can be found. There exist names like applegreen, fieldgrey, slategray and so on, somtimes different shades of such colours are mentioned also (e.g. light and dark applegreen). Is there any general opinion in the collectors community, how to call the colour of a certain textbook helmet, e.g. a Heer M 42 SD? If the sources do not provide a system, then the collectors at least should have a system of coulours, that could be understood all over the world.
These problems might be odd for an advanced collector, but I still have to learn a lot.
Thank You in advance
Johannes

This is considered textbook although variration in color exist throughout the series of the M35/40/42..
The Heer and Kriegsmarine first started with a light, semi-matt green color often refered to as the pea green. Then what I believe sometime around 1938 the color gave way to a darker, more gloss green which lasted till 1940. Then in 1940 the feldgray or dark green rough finish was being applied, this color was used till nearly the wars end, you will find the most variarations in the shade of feldgray during this period. Then lastly the dark/slate gray. Only guessing here but I feel this color transition started sometime in 1944.
The Luftwaffe prewar paint remained about the same with only slight variations in the Luft. blue/gray shade. The wartime rough/flat Luftwaffe paint had few variations. But some were issued in the Feldgray (green) colors like the Heer. This gave way to the dark/slate grey late in the war intended for all branches as mentioned above..
SS/Polizei are a little more complex and want to key Darryl in on the early examples as this is his specialized area. But I'm going to start with the M35 series. The Allg. SS had a matt or semi-gloss satin black color. Some of the early LAH were said to be light grey. The Waffen SS had a pre-war color like that of the Heer/Kriegs. In 1940 the wartime paint was either a "Heer" feldgray or the dark slate color of the style found on the Polizei combat helmets. These of course gave way to the dark/slate gray intended for all services..
I didn't mention the reissues as this can be very complex in the texture and color shade.
Now back to the post. I want to find the makers of the green (feldgray) SS helmets to see if certain makers were known to produce the green SS helmets more than other makers...
So any collectors out there please post your original wartime green SS helmet and maker..
Sorry Ralph no reissues/overpaints this time...
