M42 Double Decal

This very RARE Double decal can be seen in a WWII book in a photo of the SS firing mortars. Both soldiers are facing each other, and you can clearly see both decals on either side of their helmets. I will get the info on the book, and can send pohtos of this page. As I understand, the SS were not permitted to put both decals on their helmets, however some did, due to the pride of their designations... Many novice collectors will swear it's a fake, however those "in the know" realize that this is a very rare find. This piece has supporting photos, a certification from an auction house, and a personal letter from the widow of the American soldier that brought this home with him. Just because it's not affordable, doesn't mean it's fake...

I called my dad, and he told me this...
That helmet is a 42 DD showing SS and party. It was taken in 1944 after a tank battle, and insuing fire fight with ss troups. The photos of the tank, the dead SS sodier, and these events were taken by the Liutenant that brought the helmet home. The helmet is seen laying next to the downed SS soldier in one of the photos. This took place in the Italian theatre, where the only 42DD helmets were known to exist. The soldier that took this helmet was a carrer officer, and a liutenant at the time. He died two years ago, and his widow put the helmet, along with photos, german guns and metals, and documents up for auction before she went into an assisted living home. There is a certified letter from the auction house attesting to the source and origionality of the items. If you would like more information, please email me at

Can you post better photos ,just in front of decals,because from this point of view seems are not good,but may be for the wrong angle.

I remember receiving pictures of this very helmet about a year ago. I posted it up on another forum, and consensus was that the decals were repros.

I have never seen an original SS decal with these types of graphics.

I would like to hear from others if perhaps there were any variants. But at this point, I would have to say, that my position as before, is that the decals are repros.

Here is another shot. The angle is not good.

Solo is correct about a close up straight on picture is needed.

As an additional note, I have never known an auction house that can truly certify Militaria as "original". Most auction companies have to consult with third party experts in each collecting niche.

My god, who wouldn't kill for the ever elusive DD M42 SS lid????

They did exist in very small, I mean very small numbers. Unfortunately this appears to be a ND M42 with decals added. The decals looks to the from the 70s era, so 30 year old decals can be deceiving.
