It appears that the edges of the runes have a "sawtooth" look rather than straight edges. I read that this is an indication of a
post 1945 decal. Is this fact or fiction?

Dan,
Excellent observation. That is referred to as pixillation. It occurs when decals are copied using computer technology. As you know, a computer screen cannot give you a straight edge on a diagonal...it is stair-step if you look through a high power loupe.

As for the party shield...notice the white circle visible under the red field. Originals were layered so it should have the white colour under the entire decal.

thanks for all the info folks just goes to show how good this forum gets ,the sawtooth you mentioned is a great pointer but i suppose they have inproved.
are you all still sure its a total repaint and not a period black shell.
once again thanks for the input.ps only paid £30 for it how do they make a profit.

I only use a 10 power loupe. I feel that it is all I need to see what has to be seen.
