German Helmet M16 DD Black Police 1934

I collect M16's but have no experience of Police etc, can anyone shed any light on this? Does it look OK?

    Dave,
I've never seen anything like that before...somehow it seems rather suspect to me. It's much too fanciful. However, having said that...you never know. I believe you "take your chances" on this one.

    Cheers,

I've just received jpg's taken from "German Helmets of The Second World War" Branislav Radovic pages 58 clearly showing an M18 helmet carrying the Police insignia that are placed directly onto the shell but are on thin copper shields which are attached with pins through the helmet. This is in Bill Shea's collection.

Also page 62, same book, another M18 Police helmet with Assman made metal shields also attached with pins which pass through the shell, collection of Marcus Cotton. So it appears the Police did use metal decals.

There's some more pictures on this item, I'd appreciate any feedback.

I don't know for sure either but some things do concern me..
The markings on the shield. Where's the other shield? Why is the one shield off? I'm viewing it as a helmet with too many liability's..

            Hi Dave and all,
this lid throws up a few concernes !! yes the police / police used M18 helmets with various shield attached, and Austrian shells, but it looks that this one has the shields attached thro` the liner rivet holes??or am i wrong where as most helmets with shields attached have thier fixings attached through the helmet.

This IMO may be an Austrian shell with M31 liner(?) still retaining the imp. Austrian chinstrap but if the shields are attached as mentioned above could be later additions

            further comments welcome.

I have two police helmets having the metal shields, both have Assman/Assman-type badges. Commenting only on my helmets, the badges are of brass construction with painted finishes, and are secured to the helmet via prongs. The prongs are bent over and reside between the interior helmet shell and the liner band. Both helmet shells are of post-WW1 manufacture, one is the M-34-style having the double screened vents, the other is the M-18 style, it too has double screened vents.

                Hello!

Think the German M16 (not Austrian M18) shell, the liner and may be the chinstrap are ok. But such decals for a German Police helmet are complete nonsense.

The attachement of the decals in the rivet hole is not correct and IMO never exists in reality.

Yes there are helmets with double metal decals, but that are only Fire-department ones, not Police (some kind of SA-troops use also metal ones, but they had other decals). One side round swastikashield other side a national shield.
I´d never seen Police decals in form of the cap eagles on a decal shield. Early Police helmets only have a big painted swastika on one side of the helmet, no metal decal with the eagle!

The marking of the decals (Wolfsschanze) speaks it´s own language: "Made in Poland"

IMO this is an old German M16 FD helmet which is a little bit tuned up.

In Germany they use some old M16/M18 helmets in voluntary fire brigades up to the late 70ies for the little greenhorns!

                Regards

                Gerd

Could somebody please post pictures of this kind of metal shield with police insignia being worn..........

I am interested in period photographs and pictures of these kind of helmets in collection today.

I have not ever seen this type of insignia before........

As far as I know the summary given by "Niedersachsen" is correct.

If the eagle on the shield is of the same model as the Police-eagle-decals on, let's say, an M40 or M42 helmet.............than these are surely not from 1934..........as that eagle design was indtroduced in 1936. From that date on the decals as we all know them where worn.

As "Niedersachsen" mentions correctly, the SA Feldjägerkorps indeed did wear metal insignia on their helmets. It was the prussian Starburst which can also be found on SA-FJK collartabs, gorgets etc.

                  help appreciated

                  thanks

Here's the one from the Radovic books. Sorry for the quality as I don't have a scanner and used a digital camera..
