From my point of wiev the cover has not been on that helmet since it saw action. Background as a skilled corrosion worker the helmet looks muck more corroded and aged then the cover itself. I question why the thin zeltmaterial used for cover seems strong and elastic while the tough leather in the helmet has rotten away...

The cover looks like a nice one and from my experience it could match the shape of the helmet. The cotton duck material is very resistant... if stored in a vented area it could get wet for many times without taking large damage. I have seen helmets that looked worse that this that still had relativly nice covers on them....To say if this pair was together since the war is a tough challenge though...still IMO it could be. It looks as if the outside of the helmet looks much better than the inside...?

It seems as if the helmet was hung by the chin-strap and left-out in the elements.... That would explain the shape and stiffness of the strap - and also explain the fading of the cover and heavy rusting of the rocker clips.
Can you show us the external part of the shell please?
Cheers,
Asper
