I won't try to argue anything without further decent pics, but if its not a KM, (suppose it should really have a tri shield too if it was 1940 ish, unless I picked him up wrong and his uncle went in 1940 (with the HD, and brought the helmet back at the tail end), it is a bloody outstanding heer(EF 64)!

I haven't commited myself to telling him the bad news regarding the other,I dunno how he will take it.I suspect hes not going to believe me but I'm going to have to tell him.Hopefully he will get a refund, I'll update when poss.

      Cheers guys,

        Cheers guys,
Well, if he doesn't believe you that the SS helmet is a fake, that's up to him, but you should at least try. If not, he'll figure it out one day and then it'll too late for a refund for sure- if it's not already.

I was waiting for an answer regarding the seller but no reply, so I've e-mailed the bad news with a basic explanation regarding the decal being wrong for the maker,(and take it from there when he grills me), hopefully I'll hear back soon.
(Its one of those Italian pocher copies I think? Can anybody instantly recognise from those photos?)
Bottom line I guess was he wasn't asking my opinion he was just showing me it, so I guess he'll be annoyed at me for a while.

I know its for the best in the long-run.

Latest on this is that I was back over at my friends house with my books. In the couple of hours I was there I did manage to convince him enough to go for other opinions which will be done sometime down the road.
He did only have a seven day return but he reckons that the guy would be okay about it if positive proof could be obtained.
I had a slight problem there as the decal measurements matched exactly the same as the decal measurements in Ludwig Baers Hogsh,3rd print, Pg 104.(different decal though).
The runes themselves do appear to be like the Pocher 1st pattern as depicted on Pg 231 of SS steel. The inside border does not exist though!
Which is where I need to ask someone in the know, are those decals exactly to scale in SS steel? - which would make life much easier for me in my persuit to show its a faked lid.

I can now appreciate how frustrating it must be for the old hands trying to teach the newer collectors the ropes! - .....I also now know the need to handle and see as many helmets as possible.
I haven't handled enough, or seen enough in the 3 dimensional context, no where near enough, especially to try and make a call on a SS!

Little things like the ' thumb print' wear on the front visor on his camo I didn't like, but it seems like a common wear spot as the Heer/KM? also showed this same wear! (he was reluctant for me to take any more photos, so I didn't push).

I left a bit disappointed for not being able to convince him totally, or myself to some degree, that it was a blatant fake.
However my doubts did definetly disappear when I looked at the very expensive DD on the same sellers site at the moment, that has a party flag that is positively a fake, at least going by SS steel.Oh and the tanned er winter camo has exactly the same rune as his winter camo.....

Again it would be helpful if someone could tell me if the decal overall measurements should be the same as the sizes shown in the photos in Kelly Hicks book? (that would make his out by quite a bit). - specificaly Pgs 229 - 232.

              Thanks guys,

              C.

A yes or No would do.

-alternatively the name of a book I can buy that contains the info I seek?

I have 5 helmet books,6th on its way, and even although,(to me), it seems like a straightforward easy way to determine older fake runes from real, in none of the books that I have read give out exact rune measurements. - or mention that 'this photo is a 1:1 scale'. Unless I've missed it between the lines?

                - or is buying a real SS helmet (or many) and taken measurements the only way I will find out this?

                C.

                  So its 'CATCH 22'.

Can't buy helmets without the info - can't have the info without buying the helmets.

                  scale ruler my only option?

                  Oh well......
