You cant really say any precise rules regarding the condition, because it really depends a lot on depth, local soil, etc.
Helmet in post 22 is from Stalingrad. For Stalingrad, this was considered very good condition. In St Petersburg, this would be considered average, or even below average. The golden area is really around St Petersburg, where items can be found as new.
The helmet below is also from Stalingrad. It is about average for a Stalingrad item.

      Hello
For those who don't know much about leather surviving for a long time ,in the right conditions ( of course) should pay a visit to the "British Museeum" and take a look at the "Bog Man" thousands of years old ,preserved intact with everything he wore. Go to Cairo ,there, Mummies are an other perfect example ,artifacts from the Titanic ,pair of shoes found ,boots from the Bismark , civil war battlefield (as mentioned earlier) WW1 battlefield ,Verdun were pair of boots are still laying on the ground ,and the list can go on and on and on and on ,so 60 years is nothing !!! and I am sure this leather could have lasted longer ,if left in the ground.
      I really like this helmet.
      Best Regards
      Pierre-Yves

        Snow camo helmets

        Hi,

I've been digging the forests of the Ardennes in Luxembourg & Belgium for many, many years. Snow camos were widely used during the Battle of the Bulge too !
By my experience I may pretend that white-washed helmets didn't keep their camo after +50 years in the ground. They simply loose it totally from water penetrating into the ground. The only snow camos which will survive are in fact the white painted ones ! I must say that among all unearthed helmets there were only 4 winter camos (white paint !) during all those years !!
Amazing what can still be discovered in Latvia, Estonia & Russia !
Eugene Asafov is a great guy - reliable and very honest !!

        Friendly greetings from Belgium,

        Owi
