Is the para helmet genuine?if it was I would have expected it to go for $5000 ,if it isnt doesnt that cast suspicion on the helmet and cover? just a thought Rob.

I think the cover was original, the buyer hadn't bought anything from eBay since Sept 2005... my guess is this fellow is a private collector with deep pockets and a lot of patience. I missed that cover by $500 and I thought I had it won at that price - incredible really. In my opinion the buyer got the item pretty much at market value....
unfortunately, the prices are really becoming insane... ten years from now - once the whole widow and vet generation passes away - I'm not really sure if there will be anymore bargains anymore - and it will also be the end of the traditional dealers... eStand-like setups will definitely become the way of the future.
One thing is for sure, eBay is no longer a bargain-ville, and when you find something incredible - 300 other folks have too - and some will always have more money than us.
Rats! All the negotiations with the wife for nothing!... Hmmm... at least with that cash I'll be able to buy a nice bottle of Whiskey to drown my sorrows...

[quote=foamspoon]I stalked all evening on this cover hoping it was a sleeper and I could get it. Put in my fair bid but was rejected!! The bid was over $6500! Oh well. I would have liked to have it at a sleeper price!
Yes, I saw this as soon as it hit the market, and thought it looked
like the real deal. I didn't expect it to go this high either. The same seller
had a believable FJ camo too!!! It went for less than half the price
of this SS lid. Everything seemed on the up and up, though. They're
still out there. I'll bet the seller is doing cart-wheels tonite!

I don't know......the seller seems to imply he doesn't know what he was offering. Yet he was also selling fake covers where he knew 2 were oakleaf pattern fake covers. And he knew another was a fake splinter cover. That SS cover would show some signs of having been on that helmet with all the wear and rust on that helmet. I have seen enough covers original to helmets. He also implied on the FJ helmet sale that is was not sure it was a paratrooper helmet with the "paratrooper?" comment. Yet he knew he had repro para bolts and helmet/ covers.
Sorry guys, I am very suspicious.
I hope the buyer knows what he is doing.Willi

If Willi's research is correct, then this auction shows exactly why I don't take those chances any more (especially at this price level); any seller who says, "We are selling this as found as we do not know much about these", but at the same time knows enough about covers in order to describe oakleaf patterns... well, it doesn't look good.
And in my opinion, that paint on the para helmet doesn't look right; when I couple it with the sweetly innocent description that happens to give just enough info to whet the appetite of someone who does know what to look for, I'd have stayed far away.
So, I'd say that those of you who bid and lost will breathe a large sigh of relief when it comes out that both of these helmets are not what you thought you'd be receiving - and with no return privilege.

In terms of the pictures the seller posted on the auction - I requested a lot of specific details myself, like my requests I'm sure a lot of other folks must have asked for the same shots - hence why the pictures were posted and not emailed as I requested.
Well, whom ever the seller is, the profit margin on that cover is going to be small - a I wouldn't pay more than what it sold for. Surely there will be a buyer - but how much more than $7,000 is someone going to pay for a camo cover?
Also, perhaps it was the photographer that wasn't very skilled with the lighting - but didn't the cover seem to lack the usual vibrant colours? I suspect the rust from the helmet must have dulled the colours a bit.
Nevertheless, it would've been a nice addition to any collection.
