Note that this is an M42. How many period photos of M42s being worn in Africa are there?

This looks like one of those torched helmets from the early '70s and certainly no good.

As I have come to know it, the palm tree on helmet insigina is a fantasy configuration..

I still think we will see an original one day that everyone will argree as being good. I've spoken to serveral local & well established DAK collectors on this subject & although they have seen several very convincing DAK helmets in collections around the world with the palm tree applied, untill someone show's up with a period photo showing it applied on a helmet ( which at the moment no one has ), no one will believe them as original. One of these collectors has interviewed many DAK veterans & he has asked them specifically if applying palm trees on helmets was ever done & there answer was no. So untill a photo show's up, this subject is a bit of a dead duck regardless of how many helmets are posted with a palm tree applied !

you never know. I would tend to believe that it was done, albeit very, very rarely.
The soldiers drew the palm and swastika on many items eg. letters home, postcards, id covers, equipment. I would be willing to bet that it was done on helmets somewhere at some time.

On a side note, interviewing DAK veterans (or any vets) can be misleading.
I interviewed one DAK veteran who served two years in Afrika. He told me he had never seen or heard of DAK kalendars, and as we know they are were actually quite ubiquitous.

I do believ that at an individual level this was doen, just like the shooting star emblem found on Fj helmets. So far I have never encountered a hand painted insignia that convinces me. Yet they probably did exist
