Erel Luftwaffe Officer's Visor - Please Take A Look!

    Hi Everyone,

Please could I ask some opinions on this visor, as there would seem to be a few anomalies.

Firstly, the cap is dated under the sweatband 1944, yet bears the droop tail eagle.

Also, the lining, according to the Wilkins book, since it is grey, is the wrong colour. However, the lining doesn't appear to have been removed.

Similarly, returning to the insignia, no stitching from this penetrates the lining.

In spite of the above though, various features would seem to be correct for a late-war Erel; specifically, the chin-cord, which is the correct size for Officer's visors and also has the correct metal sliders. Also, the maker-marks are consistent with late war Erel visors. The peak too would seem to be correct and for that matter original to the visor.

Anyway, if I could ask your opinions on this, I would be most grateful.

    Thanks,
    Toby.

                    Hi Toby -

I think the eagle can be explained by the fact that it looks to have been re-sewn, so that is not that big of an issue other than it has been resewn. I have seen other Erels (Heer) with grey linings, and according to Wilkins that is not "textbook" either, but they are most definitely period.

I also think that the Insignia has been re-applied. Everything else looks to be fine.

Please be careful lifting up the sweatbands on these eReL's! It's paper thin and you risk ripping it every time.

                          Don, Ben,

                          Many thanks for replying.

And yes, I will be careful about the sweatband. I must admit I don't like touching it.

@ Ben - for the previous advice.

                          Best,
                          Toby.
