    Subdued Luft decal

I recall that there has been much dispute about the so called Luftwaffe "subdued decal". but I may have just received a helmet with one that is real. This helmet came indirectly from a vet (his garage) and the helmet has not been cleaned or disturbed from its dirty condition. The helmet is a double decal with some surface pitting, but what is interesting is the eagle decal was redecaled and the newer decal is a muted green in color. Here is a picture from a little distance and if I can get a camera with a macro lens I'll get a close up. Before I waste anyone's time, my first question, is this the style of decal that is in dispute?
    Thanks

Need a straight shot of the decal but it looks to be just a reissue with the decal peeking out.

I think I see some white in the Swastika,as Perry mentioned maybe from the over paint.

        helmet

Well I tried to take a close up with my cheap HP digital camera, but it is so blurred you can't make it out. I'll try to get a friend over who has a better camera to take a shot. The green subdued eagle was placed over the first eagle, but not directly over it. That is why you can see part of the first eagle which is white. Is the green subdued eagle the one that was controversial in the past? Anyway I'll see if I can get a shot of it. If this is the controversial one, then I'll bring it to the SOS so, TY, Tom Kibler, Larry Marcella, etc can take a look at it. Perry will you be going to the SOS? I would really like to show this one to you.

Here is an attempt with the flash, I'll try to get a better shot at a later time. This is one that will have to be seen in hand.....

            helmet

How's this for a desperate measure of a technically challenged collector! I put the helmet on a scanner in a crude attempt to get a closeup of the decal. This is all I can do for tonight. Anyway it is not too good because of the lighting, but it does show you the green decal was placed over the first one...

                Marty,

I believe that that the green and blue Luft decals are certainly controversial. I have seen (and photographed) unapplied versions of these that are TR period produced. As with any period produced item, it is bound to make its way to the soldier in the field in some way, shape or form.

I feel that these types of decals fall under the "Strache Syndrom", in that it is not whether they are real, it's whether they were period applied. Just like the Strache decals, many were abused post-war and applied on anything and everything. And yet there are vet "bring-back" pieces with original TR applied Straches. As a result - they develop controversy.

                  decal

I understand the controversery on these and would normally not give one a second look. But when you get a helmet like this out of the woodwork and it has what appears to be this decal on it, you have to start to wonder. As I mentioned earlier, I will bring this to the SOS to show the helmet guys. There is no way this thing was added post war and it will be very apparent when examined with a eye loupe. I guess we will add to this thread when others have looked at it. In the mean time I suggest keeping an open mind....

                  Thanks
