M40 Quist SS

Hello,

I would like please have your opinion about this helmet.

1. I have a big doubt about the decal… what do you think about it?

BUT the helmet seems to be a WSS helmet, because I see no trace of decal on the other side and leaf springs are green painted (so, production before 1943), so this helmet in not a late war Quist model with no decal.
In addition, I read that the SS Quist helmets are green painted in opposition with Heer, that are rather grey.



2. So, my other question is, if this visible decal is a fake, what should I do? Try to remove it?

You might be able to remove the decal with a rag soaked with warm water,but who knows what underneath the jabrony who put the fake decal on also aggressively sandpapered that area to artificially age it

Yes, I was sure of 99% that the decal was a fake, thank you to confirm it.

But do you think there was a Heer decal on the left side ? It seems hardly possible, we should see something, these decals could not be removed so easily...
What could it be for helmet ? Not a Luft, not a Polizei... It's a mistery for me ????

No sign of Heer. Mid to late war, Quist made their M40 line till wars end.

I also thought this, but the leaf springs are green painted, so, production before 1943, with decal normally.

It looks like the "decal" is painted on to me. It's obviously done over the scratches concentrated around the shield as you can see the scratches where the "decal" is undamaged. Some of the decal is uncovered intentionally to show the rust and chips under but some is not. One question is why go to the effort to paint in an obviously scratched area? I guess it's possible there was remnants of a decal that was scratched off and this was someone's restoration effort. I would think that since it is side-marked instead of rear-marked only would lend some chance to this originally fitting in the decalled time period.

Looks like fake decal with laquer over it, could be hard to remove ..

Yes, I will at least try to remove it, it's pity for the rest of the helmet, which is still in good condition, especially the green painting... I will begin with warm water and then with turpentine and if there are no results, with a bit stripper
