    SS Pith helmet?

A friend bought this from one of his friends ho claimed he bought it from a vet. I figure the story has a 50/50 chance of being true. Anyway, do any of you have experience with these? Here are pics of the shields.

        Thanks!
I have searched the past threads and read that one already. If any one has any other advise, please let me know. I am pretty sure the shields are zinc, absolutely not aluminum.
        Thanks again!

If it were mine, I would take a shield off and check for the jfs 42 or 43 mark. Are the pins round or flat?

I can see why one would be tempted to take the insignia off to have a look at the reverse. If, on the other hand, the hat is all original and the insignia has never been off, the LAST thing I would do would be bend the prongs and take them off. To me, that's like removing the liner from a helmet and putting it back in. At one time accepted practice - but not now!!

It is either real or fake, How will you know? Real shields on a real helmet applied when?
If you want the answers, sometimes you have to do what you might not want to other wise.
When the shields are off then you can see if they are real, if they are the only ones to have ever been on the helmet.
If you do not then you never know,
again IF it were mine, I would, Steve would not, everyone has there own beliefs in all this stuff.
              Good Luck

Those shields, if they are original to the piece, might exhibit some tell tale marks from age...tarnish to the twill on the outside and maybe some verdigris possibly around the prongs on the inside.

I think some of the forum members can tell if these are real or noit without taking off the shields. I would advise against taking them off.

                    Thanks guys!
I did share a few emails with Dave who has the most experience with these. The previous owner did take one off and told me what it said before we did any research. The shields are zinc and JFS 42 marked. I am a little paranoid at times and never believe the "vet" story. And since it went through an intermediate I took the story with a grain of salt. However, it appears I am lucky and got an original SS pith helmet! In the last few days I did experience a lot of
