it is a good question and I looked into that as well (fall of Rome)
The new RSI uniforms with closed neck and 4 or 5 button front (mimicking the German uniform) were introduced in the fall of 1944...
probably September - October...
and by that time Rome was already liberated, so my closed neck example predates the RSI uniform guidelines.
Mine also has a distinct German feature, it has split cuffs with cuff buttons and not Italian closed cuffs...
This mean it was made to duplicate a German uniform exactly for wear under German forces, hence my choice to restore it as Italian Waffen SS.
It also has the wide collar for that style insignia. The Italian SS was raised and obtained uniforms (kit/gear/helmets) locally in Italy unlike all other Foreign SS formations...Last edited by NickG; 05-14-2019, 05:48 PM.

Well Nick ..
i have one RSI tunic that is taking its own twist on Italian uniform...its style borrows from both the German 44 late war tunic & also some from the British battle dress ! ..made for econamy & ease of manufacteur in wartime conditions etc
It a tunic made for evaluation by the Lupo Battalion in 1944 ...this is seen on the Waxed paper label stiched inside the jacket !..the coat is a course grigo verd weave & black wool lined with striped cloth in the sleeves !
It has a fly front with early plastic/bakalite type buttons ..breast pockets but sloped lower ones typical of the time !Last edited by Semovente; 05-15-2019, 07:23 PM.
