What is this? Ammunition component?

Over the years I have found a few of these around Italian positions. Any idea what they are? I was suspecting a component for ammunition, but not sure....

Possible filler plug/cap for a Mortar round ?...or something similar...Semovente

This was my impression as well, that is may be a plug screwed into the nose of mortar rounds during transport, etc, to prevent any debries from entering the fuze space until a fuze was put into place once the mortar was ready for use in a frontline position.
Can anyone confirm this and also know what the caliber of mortar shell was, if this is indeed what this thing is?

The 81mm mortar was the main type in use ..also the smaller Brixia ..but the 81mm is the more possible source of your plugs ?
