I am not positive this photo is really related . At first glance I thought the flier on the right was Bernardi but his name (signature) does not appear on the back . Oddly he doesn't appear German and has a Greek sounding name . The photo may have just been given to Bernardi as a rememberence by what I can read on the back . Thanking the group's Italian comrades for the hostility in Treviso (Aviano Airport ) .

I am not sure that's where Bernardi would have acquired his German Pilots badge . I think the key may be in the authorizing signature on the Urkunde . If it could be deciphered one may be able to find out what unit the signature was with in that time frame.

                    ciao D ,

the S at the end might be a name from Sardinia as well ... is common there .

                      .
..for your information and research probably he was in the Treviso-Istrana Airport (Aviano is not so closed to Treviso) , still an Italian Air force base since WWI.
                      ciao

It appears he flew with " Iron Leg " Botto in Spain.

Giulio Bernardi may very well be in this photo in Spain right after Ernest "iron Leg" Botto lost his leg. It appears Botto is posing with his Gruppo.

I'm having a bit of a difficulty researching him on the net as my Italian is poor.
Also their is another Pilot by the name of Duilio Bernardi also a sergente maggiore who was an ace with 1 kill in Spain and 4 more in WW11.
At first I thought it was a spellino mistake on the Italian Aces website , but I found the listed separately on http://decoratialvalormilitare.istit...ro.org/#<br />
