But it could be a cap made in a jacket or coat , using a piece of lining with the
    square stamp ? When ?
    Prisoner's cap post 45 ?

True Nick! However in this case the cap
      (1) has a clear hat size "59" stamp
      and
      (2) the stamp is positioned in the perfect spot (centered).
It was made as a cap (not remade) and POW made items would not show cap mfg stamps, had it been assembled from recycled materials...
Perhaps yes stamps from other garments would show when recycled but that is certainly not the case here!
I do agree the manufacturing is sloppy (and certainly not German standards...)
hence you thinking it was POW made and not text book. Its just foreign (Italian) which explains the anomalies!

Member Marco shared this low profile beauty with me, worth posting for study!
It is a 2 button version but obviously Italian manufacturing!

I went with the much cheaper solution!

I really think it stands a chance. They also used German eagles...(even Heer)
Whatever they could get their hands on!

            Hi Nick
for your information all the production of the metallic insignia for the "Italienische Freiwillingen Legionen SS" was commissioned to F. M. Fratelli Lorioli in Milan.
Here you can see the original sample of the company signed and marked by the German Authority.

So these are "Probe" pieces for German approval, as they had to sanction it! Very nice!
