    Hallo jules

    This is the Mussolini fez as honour first corporal of the Volunteer Milice for the National Security 1923-1931.

    During that period the Consuls had a gilt embroidered republican fasce and not an eagle on the front of their fez.

    All for all, a good copy. Is it possible to know its source?

                  Hallo Gian

                  A piece like this, if not skillfully reassembled, can only have these origins, in my personal opinion:

                  - The collection of a great, but really great, collector (or his heirs );
                  - The sale of some stock of UM inventories of Rome (which was closed about thirty years ago). As with other prestigious headgears, it was customary to expose on display for advertising copies or models of the original ones;
                  - The sale of cloakroom film studios (also Cinecittà has now almost closed its doors since a long time) in which it was customary to manufacture the objects from original period features.

                  There is also to consider the major difference of discoloration between the red upper node and the red side gallon that seems to me a little suspicious, although it may depend on the storage conditions and this fact is also found in the oxidation of the eagle's metallic yarn which is more pronounced than that of the lateral republican fasce. About the originality of the fez body there is no doubt because in some places you can see the wear and tear caused by time. However, to make a sensible judgment, it is necessary that you, if you have really the fez in your hands, first of all check all seams very carefully. Moreover, such an object must have a bombproof pedigree, in the sense that you have to be sure who was the staff provider of Mussolini at the time and look for the cine-photographic evidences and all the ocean of other existing documents. It would also be useful to know from who it comes and what is its price to assess the seller's reliability. If it comes from the house of a private and you do not want to or not can reveal his identity, then it is a matter of your own personal expectations (and wallet of course ).

                  Best regards

                      Hi Guys!
                      There is only one way to be sure of the originality of the Fez!

                      We have the DNA of "Uncle Benito"....???
                      If we have the DNA we can compare on the rest of DNA over the Fez, and.....!

                      It's Impossible that it's an original Fez of Benito, but.....!
                      Never say Never.....!!

                            As enorepap already stated, it well could be an original fez of the same kind used by Mussolini but never used by Mussolini himself.
                            ...Produced by Unione Militare for display, for example

                              Ironcrown..presumably Mussolini would have had any number of headdress..that he would have worn at different times and functions , rallys etc that he attended...& of course as the years rolled by styles & regulations changed so would his own fez change ??...so maybe if this early fez is a Duce "spare" left on the shelf and forgottern ?!...if Jules61 can confirm from where it come from??...ie well know big collector or old manufacter of fez store room !!..then if so what value for a rare item..big big money i would think !!...Semovente
