    Italian medals identification

Hi these have been recovered in a box of trinklets.

Any idea what they are and if they are authentic?

I think these are two original unofficial medals made to commemorate two naval battles in the Mediterranenan: battaglia dello Jonio (or di Punta Stilo, or di Calabria) and battaglia della Sirte. There were actually two battles of the Sirte, both won by the italian Navy. I think the medal is referred to the first one, but not sure.

        Hallo Robs

images 1 and 2: This is the lowest grade. It seems that some medals were also minted in silver and gold. The abbreviation "G.G." identifies the engraver Giovagnola. The medal measures mm. 32 mm in diameter.

images 3 and 4: in my opinion this is an unofficial medal for italian and German personnel involved in the naval, air and land battles of Sirte in Libya in 1941. You can see indeed on a side the three mythical figures of Pegasus (air), Triton (sea) and Centaur (land). I do not comment on the producer and engraver although, given the style, many believe it was probably produced by the Lorioli Company and engraved by Costantino Affer (1906-1987). It was coined in zama or bronze or white metal and measures 32 mm. in diameter.

        Best regards
