    Italian Spanish Civil War Medal

Just back from the Leeds Arms Fair and here's my pick up of the day ... a medal awarded to Italian volunteers fighting for Franco's Nationalists. According to the story it was brought back to the UK having been taken from an Italian in North Africa.

    Detail ..

    Reverse ..

Detail .. the Italian Fasces, the German Swastika and the Falangist Arrows.

    And finally the designer ..

Hope you like it ? All opinions are welcomed of course.

    Hallo Ian

This is a beautiful medal of merit for the volunteers of the Spanish Campaign (decree n.1244 of June 6, 1940 which authorized its ribbon). Consequently, private industry (mainly Lorioli company) provided in the meantime to coin different models for the personnel who still wanted to wear the medal. Your model is the one that bears on one side the same design of the commemorative medal of the Italian Campaign of Spain, also coined by Lorioli; obviously you need a different ribbon in which the colors of Spain are matched to the typical crimson color of the medals of the Italian volunteers. The engraver is the famous Costantino Affer (1906-1987):

Many thanks gentlemen, as the ribbon is how it was found (allegedly of course) I will almost certainly leave it as it is.

Where are we with value on this piece please ? I paid £80 as I seem to recall reading somewhere that they are rare ?

        Many thanks again, Ian.
