Here's an Africa Orientale medal with a device that does not belong with it, to my knowledge.

Is it possible the star is from the pictured medal?

Hello,
traditionally, for italian medal ribbons, every star means 1 year of campaign service.
But never seen over this type of medal.

The gladio instead is for military personnel.

Yes, odd looking star.

The thread it's sewn in with looks original. So probably the intent of the owner was to signify 1 year of combat service in Ethiopia (?)

embroidered.
