Unknown Italian or German Insignia from Tobruk

Hello everyone, A few weeks ago, I pick up a large group of 20+ insignia from an Australian Veteran who fought at Tobruk in 1941. Most of the items were Italian but a few where German. Most of which I could identify but this piece is a missing to me? Would anyone happen to know if this insignia, German or Italian? Also does anyone know what rank this is?

Hello,
I'm pretty sure this is an Italian insignia.
First thing that comes to my mind is an Officer insignia for fez or "alpino" cap in the MVSN.
Just guessing, will do some research.

That chevron is indeed Italian

first impression: a rank's chevron for colonial troops but, so far, I have not found anything on my books that confirms it ....

Thank you for all for that. At least I know it's Italian but I guess the question is. What is it? I was thinking MVSN from what I have research but then again, it does excalty match their cap ranks. At least from the book that I have. I would think their would be just as many books on Italian militaria as their is on German since it was a Major Axis Power. At any rate, if it was colonial? Would it be for the sleeve or cap?

It look too small to be colonial that why I going more toward MVSN but I have been wrong before.

Could it had been for an alpine cap and is it a major rank?
