My pick would be some type of "colonial rifle" or "colonial infantry" unit,

Hallo Nezf these are shoulder boards for NCO of Colonial Infantery.
Look strange the red in the down, perhaps are only another pair of.
These sholders are correct for Sergeants in caky color and the traditional colors of the Colonial Infantery batalion, correct the rght buttons with the badge of unit on a SMOOTH surface, these buttons was in use for the troops and for the NCO.
The brass badge on the shoulder come from metallic shoulder boards for great Uniforms of officers.
Sometimes these metal badges was used in colonial territories, in this configuration these shoulders look like for the great uniform of the NCO.

Nice find Nzef. I too saw these on the NZ auction where you got it. A couple of years ago i purchased from the Brisbane Legacy Militaria auction in Australia this grouping of Epps and the badge for the 39th Inf. "Bologna" division.

My question is for Lafitte. In your post you stated that The metal badge on the Epp and its configuration would of been used on the dress uniform only. On the field uniform was it only cloth insignia in the eppaulette?

agree with Lafitte normally this badge make part of shoulder boards of the gala/dress
uniforms possible used on this configuration on field uniform only in not ordinary case.

              Yes is it right.
Are know shuolder bords with metal badges on normaly that ones was used on field tunics, problably was difficolties to find the correcy badges embroyed on black cloth or thin was too much fragiles and delicate for a field uses.
The last you post arevery beautiful, note the correct kaky wool cloth in the down of the shoulder board.

two pair of italian shoulder boards (supply corps) hand embroidered, in cloth for the
blue gala uniform and another for the white summer tunic in green ; sometimes the
italian officers prefer the shoulder boards in cloth for the blue tunic or white uniforms.
                cheers, Raffaello
