Yes Theo, it is the 45mm Brixia grenade for M.35 small mortar or lance grenade
widely used pre and during wwII. It lacks the cup on top. Here's the small
    Brixia M.35 mortar: Ciao PaoloM

The mortar had a ray of action, from 100 to 500 meters, it was very precise, but the grenades had scarce effectiveness.

Thanks for the information... I see some rounds that are painted red on top and some that are white.. are the white painted smoke rounds?

I have the original manual of the mortar to house, I have to consult it, then I will know you to say what it points out the color, the red generally points out war ammunition.
                Ciao, Luca.

I have consulted the manual of the "Mortaio D'assalto M35 da 45 mm BRIXIA".
                  Three types of grenade exist.
                  War-grenade painted of red,
loaded with detonate exercise charge painted of white,
                  inert , not painted.
                  Regards, Luca.

                      Boy! Don't touch 'em....!

When I was a boy, during the elementary schools some boxes of inert hand
grenades and bombs were illustrated by the teachers to the pupils with the
advice: 'Boy!Don't touch 'em....!' .You've to bear in mind that Italy, as other
countries where the war stationed several years, was a real battle field, expecially in the countrysides or in the abandoned villages, and it was possible
to find filled bombs like these.Several accidents occurred, and the boys of the
time paid an high tribute. It happens occasionally also today.I'm posting the
pics of two of these boxes full of grenades and explosives where (just to return
to this interesting thread) it is possible to see two specimen of Brixia mortar
grenades:one painted red and silver (war issue) and the other black and white
                      (training charge). Ciao PaoloM
