I begin posting some examples:

At left the 2Lt and at right the 1Lt, Army issue, with grey-green wool cover.
They can exist without any cover, or also with the 'rust' cover as below:

or with the grey-blue wool cover of the R. Aeronautica.

Here's another type of Italian canteen,always seen in the 2Lt version, with
different shape.This bears a grey-green wool (faded) cover, but several
do exist without any cover.IMO this model can be of the '20s, issued also
to our colonial troops and used also during WWII:
