Great photos of Italian pilots and aircraft. Italy has a notable aviation history. My father, 1st Lt. (Primo Tenente) A.G. Johnson, was a pilot in WW1. He was a "Foggione", one of 500 American aviators trained in Foggia, Italy. Major LaGuardia, later mayor of New York City, was their commander. The US had no combat aircraft until late in the war (DH-4 Liberty) so they trained with Italian, French and British machines. Aero Club d'Italia conducted the training. My father qualified with a Breveto Superiore, which allowed him to wear the Italian pilot wings on both sleeves, as well as the US wings on his chest. I have his Italian flight log book, with the training flights entered in Italian. He ferried aircraft from aerodromes in France to and from the front. He had over 80 flights, including some in the US after the war.
