Italian Alpini (Mr. Troops) commeration medal

I am curious if anyone out there knows anything about this Italian commerative.

I Googled "Spluga" and there is a Spluga Pass in the high Mountains connecting Italy with Switzerland.

The front has "Batt. Alpini M. Spluga" engraved upon it. The back has a series of names and another Battalion that must have climed and traveled this pass.

Any help in explaining what this is would be appreciated.
