I have seen a few of these on ebay lately and they all looked brand new and unissued . But I dont know what a real one looks like coz I have never seen one , I hope its real .Rob

Hello, this one is original, is well used and not new. Dennis S who is very knowledgeable on RSI items gave it a thumbs up. Here are some more images?

Rene, Thanks but, lets just say , is somewhat knowledgableof RSI items.
I like the hat itself, but as I have always said before RSI items are hard to benchmark. Any chance on seeing the back of the skull.

Hi Dennis, RSI militaria especially headgear is definately a hard bench mark and IMO are very rare. I've only seen very few M42 model field caps.
The skull is tightly secured to the cap and I hate to mess with it but from searching the Italian forums the skull seems to be a good one.

Hi folks, base on the information provided by one of our members the field cap that I have is M44 not M42 as I originally thought.

The skull IMO is original and the exterior of the field cap is made of Italian wool. Inside the visor and crown it has a stiff cardboard.
Here is a picture of an RSI volunteer wearing a M44 field cap either very similar or like mine.
