Here's a neat image of a Luftwaffe Unteroffizier wearing the NCO version of the early black "Afrikakorps" cufftitle and what appears to be a first pattern Bulgarian Pilot's Badge on his left breast pocket. His wife wasn't a bad looking gal either...

Were there many German pilots that were awarded the Italian Pilot's badge? What were the requirements for a German pilot to earn such a badge (i.e. Italian, Bulgarian etc...)?

The Italian armed forces did bestow awards on their German counterparts.
Often you see Afrikakorps army men wearing the Italian War Merit Cross. Same sort of thing.
There was obviously a lot of co-operation between the German and Italian armies in North Africa. He probably did piloting, training or liaison work with the Italian airforce in Afrika for whatever reason and was then awarded the wings.Comment
