Unterlagen ~ One-Off Embroidery

Customs Wreath ~ I've seen two templates having different sized balls presented for those star things. Can't imagine there's any significance beyond different mfgs of the unterlagen.

Rather makes me think of the templates for SS General's tabs. Did four templates exist having zero, one, two & three 'pips' or was there one template and the pips were added as needed. Never seen unterlagen for an SS General tab. Hpoing someone has one to show.

Great thread Rick, worth the read through! I appreciate the dissection and validates for me there were no set rules as each piece was individualized by the artisan who made them.

Or to BenVK's point made by slave labor. And I don't believe there was one source for unterlagen or anything for that matter.

Almost never one source for anything, unterlagen or otherwise. But even if there had been only one source of unterlagen, we’ see the same variations that we do now. Wouldn’t change much in my opinion.

I don't know who is saying there’s little to no variance in hand embroidery with bullion/celleon insignia like this. Don’t know if I’m misinterpreting some of the comments and posts or not. But it seems like the posts are set out to prove multiple variations.

Regardless, a nicely constructed thread.

Great thread. Good thought Rick C to start it, as many have no idea.
I think we must honor those females, handembroidering intensively all of these insignia with superb quality. But remind not every female had the same skills.
Anyway: thanks to those who made them!

It is great when inspecting and finding out there is a template involved, beneath the embroidery. Even for the smallest subjects they do exist (oakleaves for collar-patches,
swastikas etc.). Without the template the embroidery largely would result into a mess!!

I forgot to mention that there are various templates (above all varying in size) for the same item, as for example the wreath for the headgear for forestry.
For this product I have noted it may have been at least five. Differences are just slightly!

I've suspected this but finding imagery of unused unterlagen is allot harder that I thought it might be.

I really like the unterlagen but I am fascinated by how the insignia was constructed. I picked up these pieces at an SOS a few years ago.

You can see the chalk marks still on the badge cloth and how the unterlagen was attached. The finished wreath is still missing a bit and is crooked on the badge cloth.
