Can I please have your opinion on this Gorget. It is magnetic. The backing is missing. I am leaning on that it is an original. I am not sure of this maker mark M. I know there is one by Assmann.

During my research for my gorget-book "50%" of those I approached said it to be fake; the
other 50% thought it to be okay. Until today no 100% proof was found! All owners had a
"story" from where the gorget came. Everyone can invent a story!

Wilhelm, thank you very much for the information. Is there any other detail on the Gorget that is also different from originals besides the ribbed tang? I was reading that the early reproductions were not magnetic. Mine in question is magnetic. So if it is a repro it was probably produced sometime after the non magnetic ones. Any further help would be appreciated.

As William has stated these gorgets by Maedicke have been disputed for some time. I lean to the side of them being period made as I have seen ground dug examples from people who actually dug them up. Does this one still glow in the dark?

Thank you for all the replies. Yes, it glows in the dark. I asked Wilhelm if there is any thing else wrong with it besides the tangs. Does anyone else have one like this in their collection?

In my in Germany published gorget-book there are over thirty-five (35) pages with the subject Feldgendarmerie.
The "M" version is also included of course, as is an Assmann version, which actually was worn by a member of the SS (Albert Neiss-photo of wearing is included).
He was a member of the 3. Totenkopfdivision. The Luftwaffe-version is discussed with another seven pages, including the wearing of the version with army, as
well as Luftwaffe-eagle, by airforce members. Sorry, I am not able to post photos at WAF!!
For many years I am looking for a Maedicke catalogue or price-list, where this gorget is being shown. No luck yet!
No other type of gorget with the "M"-indication was found. Just only the Feldgendarmerie-type!
Ground dug samples do not mean a thing in my opinion!!

More than fifteen years ago among Gorgets collectors reckoned with a brand of M as doubtful. I also did not consider such Gorget originals. But numerous finds in the earth on places of fighting in Russia, Kurland and the Baltics forced me to read out such Gorget from M original.
Everyone for himself draws conclusions from the shown photos. All Gorgets were from iron and magnetic.Comment

Thank you Stive for posting pics of the gorgets. It looks like the ones marked with the M & rib tang were definitely period used. What were the numbers on the front of the gorgets indicating on some of the ones you posted?
