Research

Hello Gene,

Thank you for your question and I will try to give you a decent answer as follows:

It has been my experience that during wartime, unless it was a tailor or custom made piece name tags were not usually placed on a tunic, jacket and so on.

When I saw the photos of Bill’s new haul and that the Panzer wrap was for the 505th and in the rank of Major I knew this had to be a one of the Abteilung commanders. Schwere Panzer-Abteilung (Tiger) commanders were usually of Major or Hauptmann rank.

I next turned to one of my favorite books on Tiger units, Wolfgang Schneider’s Tigers In Combat I. On page 279 this book mentions that v. Beschwitz was the Abteilung Kdr. from 9/43 to 11/44. He was awarded the DKiG as a Oberleutnant with 7./Panzer-Rgt. 3 on 12/15/41 and the Ritterkreuz with schw. Pz.-Abt. 505 on 07/27/44.

I then remembered that I had seen photos of v. Beschwitz in the book TIGER by Kleine/Kühn and several shots in the Jörg M. Hormann book, UNIFORMS OF THE PANZER TROOPS. When I saw the portrait shot of v. Beschwitz on page 90 of this book (large 505 shoulder board numbers, same cut to lapels and collar of the wrap and same National Emblem) and the RK award photo on page 301 of the TIGER by Kleine/Kühn book I knew this had to be same wrapper!

Should you need further information I will be happy to help!

Best Regards

Mike

Thanks Gene! And a question for "Panzer" Wade K.

Gene,

Thank you and I truly appreciate the compliment! Researching this stuff is my #1 favorite past time and it helps to have a whole lot of books!!!

Wade, good for you in obtaining the Werner Stangenberg Panzer-Abt. FHH black wrap.

I have a few questions for you.
Do you know if he was with this unit in February through April 1944 when Panzer-Abt. FHH was fighting in the Narva area? Also, do you know what Kompanie he served in during this time frame?

Best Regards

Mike

Mike:
You made me look in all my books and there can be little doubt that this is not Beschwitz'.

Incredible Bill...once-in-a-life-time story for about .00001% of collectors!

Hi Michael,
thanks for your comments. I don't as yet have much information on Stangenberg's postings except that his antrag for the 25 panzer badge dated April 1944 has him listed as a 'Kommandant im Pz. Kpfwg.' in 6/Panzer Regt. 4. and his 1941 Antrag for the pz kampf abz. was from 8./Pz Regt. 29. both of these units provided the basis for the FHH. It's a very confusing liniage and one I hope to delve into in more detail soon. I have some books on order connected to this.

The wrap was apparently issued to Stangenberg in early 1945, so he was with them at that time. After that I don't know. But I am contacting the FHH veteran's assoc. about any information.

Cheers! Wade K.

Congratulations a fantastic find

Wade, you also have a very rare find, I just picked up the Erel crusher to Panzer General Maus, knights cross oakleaves, swords and diamonds winner plus alot of documentation and provinance even his sign from outside of his dentists surgery.
If you ever want to do a swap for that wrapper, I am interested, can you drop me an email I have a few things I need to discuss with you, I sent you an email two days ago.

The Vet.

Sunday the Vet. called me and said that he had found a few more items.. Here they are..To include a picture of two german POWs in US overcoats.. I think the German POW on the left is Von Beschwitz.. The Vet did not remember but said that he interrogated the one on the left, but then he said that he interrogated over a 100 German officers in Hamburg and Ragensburg...BILL

Letter Received from Major Von Beschwitz

I would like to share the following information from the previous owner of the Panzer Wrap.. Sat. I received a very nice letter from MAJOR WERNER VON BESCHWITZ.. The letter states that the Uniform Jacket was once his, and like the veteran that brought the uniform jacket home who was under General Patton that he was Under General Guderian, andalso was 90 yrs. old and a Veteran of WW2.. He enclosed a picture of himslef in the Uniform and stated that it is hard to beleive that he was once that young..I have enclosed a picture of the foto that he send.. I thought this would be interesting to all who responded to this thread and again thanks to Mike Pruitt for identifying the TUNIC....BILL
