Thanks for posting the photos. I don't have any doubts at all as to the authenticity of the item - they had absolutely no idea what it was till I told them. The only quetion I have now is who might it have belonged to?
So far no belt, cap or ribbon bars have turned up. The only thing that they had that might be an award for it was something I didn't recognize at the time - a Johanniter. (I think..) There are also a few Imperial Austrian awards, plus some firemans awards...maybe a shooting tinnie or two - but not any awards that obviously came with it.
Sadly the veteran who collected it passed away a few years ago but never told anybody about any of his goodies - if he did, nobody could remember anything.
In the meantime, they have been warned to not throw away anything at all...
