I believe it is original. On occasion, you will see these appear. They were embellished by the owner with insignia. Insignia from shoulder straps, like the pip and numeral show, were common things to add.

      Hello,

I love these things. I have 2. One from IR13 and another from IR123 WWI time frame.

Perhaps the owner served pre-war as an NCO in Inf. Regt. 9 in Berlin which was heavy with tradition. The early cap eagle would suggest that. It seems to be missing a cockade.

Agree with the other members. Has an aura of being legitimate.

The eagle, as pointed out, is the first model for a visor cap. When the bearer of the wallet either updated his eagle to the newer model or bought a new cap, he retained the first pattern eagle as a remembrance, along with either current or previous regimental number and rank pip, etc. Looks like there may have been one additional device that has gone missing?

                Ron,
I should have known you would have something like this as well! Both the posted wallets are wonderful items.

                  Oberwachmeister Jungmichel

This one belonged to an Oberwachtmeister Jungmichel of Reiter Regiment 12.

                    Hello,

I dug mine out tonight. The first one is to a soldier with the initials AS and was in IR123 in Ulm. I am guessing this was a prewar piece. There are notes and coins from the era. the back says something to a remembrance of his time in Ulm. This is where the unit was located.

My second one is from IR13 I suspect. I picked it up in Ulm Early Aluminum pips and numbers.

A work mate introduced me to his grandfather, a Blue Division veteran. He had his wallet all decorated with german insignia, full of russian bills and his dog tag also. I don't know what happened to all that when the man died, some years ago...

Really neat wallets guys. Thanks for sharing.

I'd seen one or two at shows/fleamarkets in Germany but didn't buy. Kinda regret it. Can't buy it all however, and I was usually going home with the trunk of my BMW fully stocked.

Here is another example of cyphers and numbers used for decoration. On this small piece of copper is engraved "Schnitzeljagd (Scavenger Hunt) 11. 11. 37.
