That is great you got the service files. So this is another example of an officer who wore the "legacy" tunic for the unit that was assigned to the ones he served on active duty even though he would wear a different uniform and insignia for field and day to day service with newer assignments. What is also important is that it is an example of the uniform containing to be worn and "upgraded" as he was promoted etc. This very similar to other examples of officers and enlisted continuing to wear the unit insignia of their "Friedensdienststelle" or "Peacetime unit". Many officers kept wearing the dress tunics of their prewar or legacy units. This was especially true with Cavalry. It can make it very hard to figure out who there are if service records are not preserved.

          Congratulations Mark,
the service file added to the tunic makes this a superb item.

A note in his file, dated January 19, 1939, expressively says that he has to wear the uniform of Art. Regt. 56

            Johnny, Naxos,

Thank you very much for this information! The regulations the German army had in place are bewildering, but I suppose this is true for many military organizations around the world. I sincerely appreciate you sharing your knowledge regarding these "regs".

The unit uniform was assigned to him as an E officer in January 1939 as a Hauptmann. What is interesting is that he continued to wear it after he was made an active Heer officer and updated his rank and awards. For his daily service and field tunic, after he became an active officer, he would wear the uniform and insignia of his assigned unit. This tunic he was allowed to wear for walking out etc. Nice to see this.
