          The size, backplate construction and what appears to have been originally a blue cloth backing, lead me to believe it one of rare Stalhelm specialist insignias. I think that I have seen this one pictured and it is Sturmtruppen or Flamethrower which of course are related anyway.

          You can search stalhelm under the friekorps board and you will find a posting of these on a period catalog depiction
