Hmmm...This is clearly a cheap and horrible fake, which you should buy and send to me. I promise to cover the postage costs!
To be serious, I really like it. There are several elements in the design and construction that I really like, and if I had come across it, I would have bought it with confidence that it is a genuine period variant on the 'private purchase' eagle theme. The fact that it is panzer black makes it more desirable, in my book, as panzer private purchase birds are rarer than their army counterparts.
So, what do I like about this cheap and obvious fake that should be sent to me immediately?
1) The design, which is 'early'.
2) Highlights in field-grey thread. I have a couple of PP eagles with field-grey highlights, so that conforms to a standard.
3) The straight 'collar' of the eagle where its neck meets its chest. The 'bad' ones tend to have a vee where the neck joins the chest, while the good ones have a horizontal line.
4) The narrowness of the torso. Although the torso is a little egg-shaped, it is still narrow, and looks 100% good for a PP eagle of the pre-war period. The modern repros of this style tend to be quite 'fat' and wide.
5) The thread. The fine thread conforms with other 'good' PP birds that I own or have seen.
6) The ring of stitches that runs around the inside of the swastika wreath. You never see that on the modern repros.
7) The amount of backing cloth that surrounds the eagle. A lot of modern repros are trimmed much closer to the body of the eagle, but if you look at original photos, you will see that the real PP birds frequently had quite wide backing surrounds.
However, please do not let my words influence you into buying it. I think you should pass on it, and tell me where it is!
Seriously, Chay, I would buy this one with confidence, and I think you should. A very nice eagle to find, and a nice variant.

I believe Mark K. is spot on. It is not a Reddick style eagle and has great traits of original Private purchase eagles.

Hi Chay,
This is the closest eagle I have to the one that you posted. This one is on dark green backing, for the army. Although the torso of the eagle is different to yours, the construction is totally similar to your eagle.

Many thanks for the photos. The backing being very dark green rather than black actually backs up the authenticity of the eagle. The only place that an eagle on black backing would have gone is on a panzer 'wrapper', (leaving aside judicial eagles, navy admin eagles, etc), and panzer wrappers were effectively the equivalent of work overalls. Which begs the question of why a soldier would have bought a private purchase eagle to put on his overalls. Yes, it could have happened, but it makes far more sense for an infantry soldier to have bought a private purchase eagle to put on his 'walking out' tunic. Which is why a dark green background on this eagle 'works' for me. Fred's eagles are great, and they show how much your example fits in to the theme.
