Swallow Nest - WW2 or DDR?

    Hello,
What do people think of these swallow nests please - I am not sure if they are WW2 or post war?

    Regards,

I've just done a search on 'swallows nest' and have found some DDR ones that look similar. Also some of ththe post war gear (aiguillettes, lanyards etc) looks quite similar to Wehrmacht at first glance. These swallows nests are an unfamiliar item to me.

            John,

IMO they look like genuine WWII. Have you black light tested these nests? Although not always an accurate way to assess whether or not something is period...I have had very good results using the black light.

                      John,

The white fabric and/or thread used will give off a very distinctive glow if the material is post WWII. As I said earlier, this test is not absolutely fool proof especially if a WWII period piece was washed using some form of a detergent or cleaning agent.

If you have never used a black light before, try testing a piece of your white clothing and then test a known WWII period piece. It will become clear. It is important though, you don't get too close to the item you are testing because the reflection from the light could give you a false reading.

                        Hi,
I'd forgotten about this thread! I've tested the musicians' (drummers/fifers)schwalbennester with UV and they pass (no glow). They also have 7 vertical bars as opposed to 9 vertical bars for DDR. According to Uniforms and traditions of the German Army 1933-1945 p12-14-69 by Angolia - the ones I have posted are Reichsheer. They were changed from 7 to 9 bars on 10th September 1935.
