Tropical Fallschirmjäger uniform and SS black visor cap?

    Hi everyone,

I recently acquired this photo. It looks like many of these pictures from 1944/45 and showing local Volkssturm unites during training. As usual, there is a great mix of civilian and military clothing pieces.

But there is also that guy in the middle, wearing a a 4-pocket Luftwaffe tropical tunic (while there is snow on the floor), tropical Luftwaffe trousers (Edit: actually not specific to Fallschirmjäger) and... a black EM/NCO SS visor cap!

I'm very interested in hearing your opinion about what unit this guy could belong to!!

    Best,

    Max

He also wears a typical single shoulder board in black and silver weave - so he is Allgemeine SS.

I would like to see the comments if someone would bring up this tunic for discussion here on WAF

      Very interesting photo

The comments would likely be rather logical. That someone jazzed up a tunic and added nonsense. Most would think postwar, but in this case it was done during the war. The advice would likely be to remove that stuff and add tropical boards.

It look like the only reason the single Allgemeine SS board was on there was to support the cross strap.

Maybe his brother left a spare uniform home after leave from the front, and this guy borrowed it.

Clearly one of Skorzeny's men after the Mussolini rescue.

Can you determine what belt buckle he's wearing with photo in hand?

Looks flat like an SS buckle.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread so far!

Concerning the belt buckle, I can't tell if it's SS or LW.

That's my impression as well. He also wears a Bandspange but I can't tell which one.

This is one of those great mystery photos!
IMO he is neither SS or LW, because of this specific mixture of uniform items that does not make sense at all. Typical for Volksturm. Also the late war use of a support strap is a rare sight. Indeed he appears to have seen some previous service though, judging his age during the current conflict.
Intriguing at least (the same with those eldery scattered LW and DRK men in the group and the civilian dressed with what appears to be a Feuerpolizei visor cap).
