    Insignia Question- Signals Abteilung 6

    Good day,

I am looking for Signals Abteilung 6 shoulder straps for Feldwebel, Uffz, and Soldat. Now, I know that they possessed the lemon yellow waffenfarbe. My question is the Abteilung number represented the same as a regiment on the strap?

    Thanks for the assist.

    Paul

I'm pretty sure I have a pair of chain stitched shoulder straps for this regiment.

      question

Your question is not exactly clear to me. Do you want to know if the chain-stitched number is the same style and size as for a regimental number or do you want to know if a signals Abteilung was the equivalent of a regiment (in size) or yet something else?

Yes, the battalion number would be sewn or or displayed the same way as a regimental number- Unterfeldwebel and below- embroidered on the board or on a slide, higher ranks in metal numbers.

Ws the "abteilung " number early on not on the shoulder button?

Thanks Diane! I'd love to see those!!

I have a group of documents for a member of the 2./Nachrichten-Ersatz-Abteilung 6.

            My questions are:

            1. What sort of shoulder board insignia would he'd worn?
            2. As an Abteilung the same as a regiment?

            Paul

EDIT: Johnny and Jacques, I saw your posts were made when I was creating mine. Thank you.

He was a signals/communications specialist when he was enlisted. Once he was commissioned a Leutnant, he transferred to the 58th IR, where he became my great-uncle's adjutant. (I assume he put on the white waffenfarbe once commissioned) He was killed in Citadel(Kursk).

I thought the company was on the shoulder board button.

              Here is another page pertinent.

As a side note, he received the EK1 posthumously. Notice the date. He was killed on the 29th of August, 1943.

                Hello Paul,

The Standard Disposition of Signal Units from 1921 on (also before) was always the Abteilung (which means Battalion) and not the Regiment. There were only a few Regiments raised during the war wich all had Special functions. As the Abteilungen were always Independent Units, they wore their unit insignia on the shoulderstraps as a number.

The soldier from your Wehrpass did his Basic Training in Nachrichten-Ersatz Abteilung 6 which means he wore definitely Lemon yellow piped shoulderstraps. Probably he used slides which a Lemon yellow "6", but normally at this time no unit insignia was worn from the Trainees. Only the instructors used them.

Attached are NA 6 insignia from my Collection, but they are not to sell - don't ask

                Best regards,
                Andreas

And here is a late war pair with slides but also I would like to keep them so not for sale. Up above it may not be clear- ranks up to Unterfeldwebel wore slides and embroidered numbers. Based on the Wehrpass, he appears to be assigned to Infantry reserve/training units after 1941 training.

Thank you all for the explanation and illustrations. I am most grateful. Two last question, as it pertains to the Soldbuch.

                    1. What is the entry under his Uffz entry? Is that Feldwebel or something else?

                    2. So most realistically, he wore the yellow waffenfarbe without a number during training, then with the "6" until he was promoted to Leutnant? When he became an officer, he wore white? This is how I am understanding it, or am I wrong. He was my great uncle's (Who was infantry) adjutant while with the 58th IR, during Kursk. Would he have retained the Lemon Yellow waffenfarbe once he became an officer and attached to the 58th(both the signals unit and the 58th were within the 6.ID), or went to white(my thoughts)?

Johnny, you state that he may have been attached to an infantry unit, but still under the command of NA 6. So he would have still worn the yellow waffenfarbe at the time?

                    I greatly appreciate this discussion.

After he was an unteroffizier he became a Fahnrich O.A. 1-3-43 (Officer Candidate). It looks to me after his first training he was mostly assigned to infantry units. When he was wounded he was in Infantry reserve units.

So it appears that his highest enlisted rank that would have worn the yellow waffenfarbe was Uffz, or maybe Fahnrich. Does it specify which level(Uffz, UFeld, Feld- with OCS cord)? Would that be in yellow as well?

I am sorry for the tedious questions. I just want to build up the most accurate display possible to accompany his documents. They are going to be displayed right next to my family member's display. Strange how they seemed to find one another again after just over 70 years!

It is very hard to say that just from his Wehrpass. As the war progressed more people were slotted to infantry that were physically able.
