    M40 Bebelwerfer Tunic on Estand

    Sirs,

I was having a look at the Estand and took an interest in this tunic:

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=876269

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the damage to the tunic is concentrated so specifically at the waist while the rest of this tunic is in relatively good condition?

Also, the seller has posted a photo (not for sale) that is supposed to show the original owner wearing this tunic. However, it seems that the EKII ribbon has changed positions. In the original photo, the ribbon is in the second buttonhole; however, on the tunic itself the ribbon is now in the third buttonhole. That placement looks very odd to me.

    Any thoughts?

While I can't explain the change of location of the EK ribbon, I can explain your concern on the mothing.

It depends on what part of the jacket was exposed to moths. If this were folded up and laying unprotected in a shed or on a shelf in the house, then usually the moths can only lay the eggs in exposed part of the item, so that's where the damaged will occur. Here, this piece was folded so the right waist and right sleeve were exposed. Actually right now in my garage I have an old US army blanket folded and laying on a shelf, and it's been there for around ten years. Moths got to it, but only on the exposed surface of the blanket.

Looking at the picture, and especially the placement of the collar tabs, I believe that it is a picture of the same jacket. What puzzles me is why the seller is breaking up the set. Too bad.

It should be noted that the Bebelwerfers were perhaps the fiercest German troops.

Thank you for the responses. Very helpful. I do not collect uniforms but do like to learn a bit about them and this one had me puzzled. Thank you again gentlemen for your patience in answering what might seem like obvious questions.

Please indulge me one further question. I thought that Nebelwerfer troops were of the artillery branch and handled the multiple rocket launchers. Can you explain why you call them the "fiercest German troops?" Is it because the weapon system they manned were so feared?

            Thanks,

            Z

The Bebelwerfers were very tough, even more so than the W-SS and FJ..If I were an allied soldier my biggest fear would be being attacked by a Bebelwerfer division.

Interesting. That's a new one on me. I've never encountered any mention of "Bebelwerfers" before. Can anyone provide a link to some information?

For your information, the Bebel division was named after their fearless commander. Justin Bebel.
